Fish oil is one of the most popular supplements on the market today, so chances are good that you’ve heard of it. Maybe your doctor has recommended that you begin taking it, or maybe you know someone who already does. Fish oil has been used to treat many things over the years, from ADHD to weight loss. But really, what does fish oil do for you?
How Does it Work?
There are two important types of Omega-3 fatty acids which are contained in fish oils: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These are thought to have many health benefits, including the reduction of inflammation throughout the body. Fish do not actually make the Omega-3 fatty acids, but get them through their diet of prey fish and algae. The microalgae that fish consume also contain other antioxidants which help protect the fatty acids from breaking down.
People can get fish oil by eating fish or taking fish oil supplements. Some of the fish that contain high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids include mackerel, tuna, salmon, sturgeon, mullet, herring, and trout. Fish oil supplements are usually made from these fish, or cod liver, whale blubber, or seal blubber.
