Why We Need Iodine Supplements
Iodine supplements refer to edible materials that contain iodine, and are usually administered to people with an iodine deficiency. Iodine is a chemical required in the body to facilitate the production of thyroid hormones released by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones are responsible for body metabolism. An iodine deficiency in the body can lead to goiters or enlarged thyroid glands, and in severe cases brain damage. In children, a deficiency of iodine can lead to stunted growth due to poor metabolism, and in adults there can be weight loss due to failure by the body to produce enough energy function. Iodine supplements can be anything from plants to tablets. On average, the human body requires about 150 micrograms of iodine per day.
